Summer Stock

EDIT --JANUARY 2010---
Text "haiti" to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross for earthquake relief efforts. It will show up on your next phone bill. They desperately need help- hundreds of thousands may be dead. Their capital city is in ruins.

UPDATE: Nobody has anything to say about working at these places? Help your fellow techies out and leave some comments! I know where you live (thanks sitemeter).

Hey folks- I'm going to try to make this list as comprehensive as possible, so if you know of a cool place currently hiring that I've left out, send it on over!

Glimmerglass---great opportunities in opera, B'way designers quite often..MUST have a car to get anywhere. Last time I was there there was no cell phone signal for 20 miles around the site.

Lake George/Hangar/Anything upstate NY--usually pretty shady, make sure they're not signing you on at $300/wk to work 90 hours.

Your missing a great programs in California
STR in Santa Rosa is an amazing summer rep company, It takes on mostly interns. I believe you have to be a student in California.

You should add Great River Shakespeare Festival in Winona, MN. Wonderful company in a town that you can easily get to the twin cities from.

Steppenwolf Theatre Co in Chicago has a really fantastic internship program over the summer, completely unpaid, but worth it for the experience.

thank you so much for this post btw, its very helpful.

You've missed the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, SC. It's the largest arts festival in the States. 8-9 week contract for the 17 day festival with multiple venues and crews all over the city. Paid apprenticeships and staff positions, plus housing (some of which is beach-side) and a travel stipend.

Definitely a "work hard, play hard" atmosphere, but tons of fun and amazing contacts. Highly recommended.

I worked at the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca once and it was almost exactly as Nomie said. I got paid $100/wk to work 90 hours.

I worked at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival for 20 years. It was the most enjoyable part of my year, every year. From undergraduate, thru grad school, into full-time employment, it was the finest time of my life.

The technicians were nearly all working professionals taking their "summer vacations" to make art in Boulder. A truly inspired, dedicated collection of people. I learned more each summer than I did each year in school; later, as a "veteran technician," I happily taught everything I knew to every new kid--some even came to work for me back in the real world.

In 2007, the CSF got a new artistic director. He fired the entire technical staff via a mass email. Then, they hired students for peanuts to work six day weeks (ala $125=60 hours). Last I heard the run crew actually walked-out, on a strike.

Now, the shop heads are students; the designers are unknowns; the directors are local. There's nothing to learn and no connections to be made. I strongly advise against working for the "new" CSF.

Lake George was sorta fun but didn't pay super well. We did get a great house, and single rooms though.

Most places, it just depends on the kind of people you're working with.

The Michigan Shakespeare Festival is in Jackson, MI not Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor is about 30 miles away. It is held at the Baughman Theatre in the Potter Center on the campus of Jackson Community College. It is not affiliated with Jackson Community College other than using it's theatre.

There's nothing better to find a great job on summer time because you're never wet and you can enjoy a lot watching the landscapes. Viagra Online Viagra

Worked at Maine State Music Theatre in Brunswick, ME. Great pay for staff positions, and great housing accommodations. Apprentice and intern opportunities also available in every department. One of the best jobs I've ever had.

Worked at Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival in Center Valley, PA. Pay isn't as much. Dorm-style housing, but private rooms. 2 theaters, and at least twice daily repertory changeovers.

It can't work in actual fact, that's what I think.
